  15. Martigny, Switzerland. A staunch opponent of the modernizations
  16. advocated by the Second Vatican Council, Lefebvre was
  17. excommunicated in 1988 by Pope John Paul II for consecrating
  18. four "traditionalist" bishops without papal approval, creating
  19. the first major schism from the church in more than a century.
